During the opening week of the HKUST Shaw Auditorium, I was fortunate to witness the auditorium in full use. The Hong Kong Philarmonic did a series of concerts to celebrate the opening.
And it sounded terrific!
I encourage everyone to head out to the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology to enjoy a concert at Shaw Auditorium in 2022. It will be a memorable experience.

St. Georges Mansions - Sino Group
One of the most anticipated completions for 2022 is no doubt St. Georges Mansions. Sino Group is currently finishing up construction of this ultra-luxury development overlooking the historical Kadoorie Avenue.
Designed by Robert A.M Stern Architects, St. Georges Mansions offers fantastic views overlooking green, lowrise buildings, and most important the impressive Lion Rock.

Resonance-in-sight - LEAD
2021 has been an exciting year for public art in Hong Kong!
Several new artworks have been revealed over the year and I was grateful to photograph several of them.
One of those was Resonance-In-Sight, the latest iteration of public art commissioned by the Hong Kong Museum of Art. LEAD (Laboratory for Explorative Architecture and Design, led by Kristof Crolla) created an interactive artwork where by way of an AR app several artworks come to life when scanning a QR code. The artworks completed the ‘arch’.
Mayfair by the Sea 8 - Sino Group
Sino Group’s latest project, Mayfair by the Sea 8, was completed at the end of 2021. Located in Pak Shek Kok and adjacent to Hong Kong Science Park, this new residential development prioritises landscape and features a large pool. Vehicle circulation has been pushed to the back, so all focus goes on to creating a very liveable development surrounded by green.
Kris Provoost Photography has extensively photographed for Sino Group.
From their landmark projects Grand Central completed in 2021, to their resort style development, 133 Portofino in Hong Kong, the artwork Time Loop, and the innovation project CAPS 2.0
2022 will see many new residential developments completed, looking forward to photograph these in the new year!

Retail Reset - Research Project funded by HKIA
A research project looking at the commercial centres within the different public housing estates spread across Hong Kong.
Being a vital part of the society, these retail centres bring cross-generational people together. Analysis reveals different retail strategies used over the past 60 years since Hong Kong started building housing estates across the territory.
As a photographer I have contributed by visiting several retail centres and observe how these are used and have been adjusted over time since they were built over the past decades. The results will be several photo-essays that will be part of our research publication.

Winner at The Architectural Photography Awards 2021
Ending the year with another award, Kris Provoost wins at The Architectural Photography Awards 2021!
In December the winners of the The Architectural Photography Awards 2021 were announced, and I am happy to announce that I have won the “Buildings in Use” category with an image I took just before the summer here in #hongkong
As a photographer I always try to understand the context and make sense of current events. COVID-19 ravaged the world, and while we were largely spared of devastating impact on the health of the Hong Kong citizen it required draconian measures to achieve so. And I don’t use the world “draconian” lightly.
The photo here was taken in Tung Chung, a large residential area adjacent to the airport. To achieve the zero covid strategy in Hong Kong, the government imposed measures where 1 case in a building would mean everyone in that building had to shipped off to a quarantine camp. As you can imagine in Hong Kong, where 99% of the people lives in highrises, these were drastic measures. In this case, Block 11 of Caribbean Coast was completely evacuated. Nearly 2000 people were required to leave everything behind.
While health wise we remained safe, the mental and economical damage has been tremendous. This being the real cost of Zero-Covid.
Special thanks to the jury who selected my photo as a category winner:
Laurian Ghinitoiu, Hamish Crooks, Katy Harris, Richard Bryant, Marco Iuliano.
And of course, the great organizer, Lynne Bryant, who makes The Architectural Photography Awards happen every year.
MTR Tuen Ma Line - Hung Hom - Aedas
On Sunday, June 27th, 2021, the full Tuen Ma Line of the Hong Kong MTR Corporation went into operation. Connecting 2 existing lines, West Rail Line and Ma On Shan, with a new section in between. Now you can ride from Wu Kai Sha all the way to Tuen Mun in 1 go, passing 27 stations and probably upwards of 75min on that train. For me personally, this new line will make moving around Hong Kong even more convenient.
Hung Hom station has been reorganized by moving the trains on the old platforms onto new modern platforms beneath this existing building. Aedas was responsible for this reorganization and the construction of the new platforms.
Kris Provoost Photography was commissioned to photograph this new station.
